Baby Cleaning Tips: The Nappy Change
Regular nappy changes are essential to good hygiene and will help baby avoid irritating, uncomfortable nappy rash from the acids and bacteria contained in urine and faeces. Newborns will likely need a nappy change after every feed and upon waking, for a total of eight to 10 changes a day.
Having everything you need handy when you’re ready to change your baby’s nappy will make the entire process go more smoothly. You’ll need:
- A flat, washable surface, like a towel or changing mat
- Nappy wipes or warm water and a flannel or cotton wool balls
- A clean nappy
- Nappy cream or ointment
- A favourite toy
- Spare clothing, just in case
- A bag or pail for nappy disposal
Wash and dry your hands, and then lay baby over the changing surface. Open the nappy tabs. If it’s a disposable nappy, fold them back upon themselves to avoid a sticky situation, and use the nappy to wipe away any excess faeces on baby’s bottom. Lift the baby by the ankles, and fold the nappy over, sliding it over to the side out of baby’s reach. Wipe away any remaining mess with a wipe, flannel, or cotton wool balls and water. Ensure girls are cleaned front to back away from the vaginal region to avoid introducing infection-causing bacteria into the urinary tract.
When baby is clean, slip a fresh, open nappy under his or her bottom, with the tabs underneath the baby. If baby is a boy, the penis must aim down to avoid surprise leaks. Nappy cream or ointment should be applied to any areas of redness or irritation. If a cloth nappy is used, be aware that some may leave a film that can make cloth nappies water repellent.
Finish the nappy change by pulling the front of the nappy up and closing the tabs securely but not too tightly. Used disposable nappies can be refastened and disposed of in a bag, while cloth nappies can be stored in a pail until time to launder.
Taking the time to sing, talk, and play with baby during nappy changes can make this time more pleasant for both of you, will strengthen your bond, and can keep your baby distracted long enough to get the job done.
